How does gamifying childhood routines help teach independence and responsibility?

Hey everyone! I’ve been reading about using game-like elements to motivate kids to do chores and daily tasks. Wondering if anyone has experience with this approach? I’m curious about specific strategies that make routine tasks feel more like fun challenges for kids. How do you turn boring stuff like cleaning rooms or doing homework into something that actually encourages them to be more self-sufficient? Would love to hear some real-world examples or tips from parents who’ve tried this!

I’ve been using point systems with my kids for a couple years now. My 9 and 12 year olds track their chores on our tablet. They get points for making beds, doing dishes, and keeping rooms clean. Sometimes they race each other to finish tasks faster. The competitive aspect really works for us - they want to beat their own records and each other’s scores.

Our system isn't perfect but it teaches them that work comes before play. No points means no extra screen time. They've gotten way more responsible because they see direct connections between effort and rewards. It's about making responsibility feel like a challenge they can win at.
